Hawaii - Day Six- Manta Rays

This isn't our photo, (http://overworm.com/NothingToSeeHere/NTSH%20Images/Manta%20Ray.jpg) I just wanted to post a picture of what we were seeing last night. We went on a night time snorkel to see the Manta Rays. In Hawaii there is a hotel that has been shining spot lights in the ocean for like twenty years. The plankton think that this light is sunshine, which they use for photosynthesis. Manta Rays eat plankton and have learned that if they come to this spot they can find food. Through classic conditioning the Manta Rays come to this bay every night, apparently this is the only place in the world that the Rays have been conditioned this way. It was really neat to be swimming with such large creatures. There were two there last night, one five feet across and one seven feet across. The came within about 2 feet of Jeff and I. Sam had to stay on the boat, he isn't quite old enough to snorkel yet. On the way back to our harbour we had a great lightning show over the mountains.

This is Sam in the snorkel life jacket they made him wear.
